Current rules for cyclists

In 2017, a number of new road traffic rules were introduced for cyclists in Germany.

Cyclists are no longer guided by pedestrian traffic lights. If there are no special traffic lights for cyclists, the light signals for driving traffic apply.

Pure electric bicycles up to 25 km/h may use cycle paths in urban areas if they are marked with the sign "E-Bikes free", i.e. they are treated the same as pedelecs up to 25 km/h. However, the faster S-pedelecs and e-bikes that travel faster than 25 km/h are exempt from this regulation.

Children up to the age of eight have long been required to ride on the sidewalk, but their supervisors were previously obliged to use the cycle path or roadway. Under the new rules, a supervisor may also use the sidewalk at walking speed. At road crossings, both must dismount and push.

The new rules allow more and better technology for bicycle lights since 2017, they simplify and increase safety.

Bicycle lights must be marked with the test mark of the Federal Motor Transport Authority, with a wavy line and the capital letter K. If this marking is missing, use on the road is prohibited.

Batteries are now also permitted as an energy source, and daytime and high beam lights are also permitted. The installation of two headlights and rear lights is also permitted, and even mandatory for bicycles over one meter wide.

If you use detachable lights - whether powered by batteries or rechargeable batteries - you no longer have to carry them with you at all times. So if you take your road bike on a tour in daylight, you can leave the lights at home.

However, headlights must be adjusted so that other road users are not dazzled.

Another innovation will please racing cyclists. A second reflector may be dispensed with, the bike only needs to be equipped with a reflector of category Z, even if it is integrated into the rear light.

Direction indicators remain prohibited for normal bicycles, where the indicator function is provided by additional lights worn on the body. However, recumbents or other multi-track bicycles may be equipped with indicators.

The lighting of bicycle trailers has also been newly regulated. Trailers sold from 2018 onwards must be equipped with two white front and two red rear reflectors and a red tail light mounted on the left if they are 60 centimetres or wider.
