Children with stencils

As part of a road safety campaign, symbols sprayed on the sidewalk now show schoolchildren the safe route from the parents' bus stop to the school playground

On the initiative of VUP/O, there have been so-called parent stops at six Duisburg schools since 2014: If parents drive their children to school by car, they can safely drop off their pupils here without blocking the road. This is intended to alleviate the chaos in front of elementary school every morning and midday. This repeatedly causes dangerous traffic situations in front of the school gates. As recently as December 2018, a child died in front of an elementary school in Mönchengladbach in this way.

However, parents and guardians must always be encouraged to actually drive to the parents' stop so that the children can walk the rest of the way to school.

With the "Green Feet" campaign, children are now being used as multipliers for this sensible regulation for the first time. Together with police officer Peter Radtke, 42 first-graders made "foot templates". With the help of these stencils, principal Ms. Steuwer sprayed the first footprint green on 26 September - directly on the paving slabs at the parents' stop. Gradually, a marked route with 42 "green feet" was created in front of the children's eyes. If they follow this track to the school playground in future, they will be safe from the dangers of road traffic.

The necessary paint was donated by Mr. Hönninger from the public order partner "Duisburg. But safe!", who was delighted to take part in the campaign.
