Open the car door with your right hand instead of your nearer left hand. This way, your upper body automatically turns to the left, you look over your shoulder and no longer run the risk of overlooking an approaching cyclist when getting out of the car. To avoid overlooking fast cyclists who may still be behind the vehicle, you cannot do without looking in the rear-view mirror.
